Born in Niigata, Japan, Takahashi is widely known as the world's most popular female manga artist. The international success of her early works helped pave the way for the widespread acceptance of manga as a storytelling medium in the English-speaking world. She intentionally gives her stories a Japanese feel—often including references to traditional festivals and customs—to foster an interest and understanding of Japanese culture in readers across the globe.
