Literary Characters: Trick or Treat Edition

Tina Fey, not Sarah Palin
Tina Fey...not Sarah Palin (see how easy)

Halloween is only a couple of weeks away, but it seems to be getting to be a bigger celebration every year.  Around here, people decorate all most as much as they do at Christmas.  There are lights and big blow-ups on the lawn and graveyards everywhere (Here lies Izzy Riley Dead).

Of course, this year I'm betting the costume most seen will be Tina Fey as Sarah Palin.  Come on, how hard is it to dress up like that?  A suit, glasses and my old hairpiece from the '70s.

But I got to thinking about how much fun it would be to have a costume party of literary (and I use the term very loosely here) characters.  There are thousands to choose from and I wonder how many duplicates there would be?

Harry Potter could discuss fighting evil with Frodo (Lord of the Rings),  Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Perry Mason could argue law, James Bond and Harriet the Spy share secrets, Tarzan and King Kong comparing notes about women,  Hester Prynne (The Scarlet Letter) and Alvin the Chipmunk compare their embroidered As.  Well, you get the idea.

Harriet the Spy and James Bond

Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty

As for me, I worked for Disney for 5 years and my code name was Merryweather (from Sleeping Beauty), so I guess that's who I'd go as.  I wish I could do Tinkerbell, but it would more be like Tinkerbell, the senior years.  Of course, I'd love to be Stephanie Plum, if I could get 2 guys to come as Ranger and Morelli.

So, what about you?  Who would you come as (anything goes)?  Who would your character talk to?  Or what characters would you like to see have a discussion over an Appletini and pumpkin muffins?

Bottom Line:  I once dressed as a nerdy guy, but no one realized it was a costume (I'm still in therapy).

Barbara, what a fun idea! If we get to choose *any* character, I'd love to spend an evening as Midnight Shelby, my heroine in the novella "Midnight in Legend, TN." She's my favorite of the characters I've written. Midnight is tall, beautiful, self-assured... She could talk to anybody about anything! Yeah, that would be a fun evening. Magdalena

I'd go as Eve Dallas from JD Robb's In Death Series, but Roarke would have to go with me. And wouldn't it be great to have Roarke (richest man in the world) talking finance with Scrooge McDuck?) ::grin::

Barbara, Hester Prynne and Alvin? That made me laugh out loud this morning. I'd have to come to your party as Dorothy Parker. I know she's not exactly a literary character (although she's been in a few books and movies) but I've always wanted to be as recklessly witty as she was. And I imagine she'd have no trouble talking to anyone.

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter--accompanied by Jean-Claude and Asher. Then she could have a nice chat with Sookie (who brings Bill and Eric of course). You can never have too many hot vampires at a Halloween party.

Funny you should mention this, because I actually have 2 Halloween parties to attend this year. I'm going as Elizabeth Bennet (my hubby is going as Mr. Darcy) to one and as Sarah Palin to the other.

In the past I have been comic book characters (Lenore, Oblivia from the Omen Comics, Chastity) and also Alice in wonderland, Malificent and Alice from Resident Evil. this year I'm going to be The Mad Hatter. I figured it only fair and all. LOL. Happy halloween everyone!

I love Halloween and always want to throw a party, but never get around to it. I have an obsession with themed foods, like deviled eggs that look like eyeballs. Tasty. :) As for literary characters...that's tricky. I'd want to be one you could look at and know who they were, like Sherlock Holmes. Maybe Hermione Granger. I have the right hair...

I've dressed as Legolas and Elizabath Swan in the past. My favorite character from my books to dress as is Abbey from Twist. I even got a Katana in Chinatown during conference. But my favorite costumes are fairy costumes. As I said at RT my first time dressing up at the fairy ball, I can't believe I waited this long to rock some wings! Hmm, just had an idea. I can be the repulican fairy. Sarah Palin with wings!

Food for thought, dear friend--I once dresssed as an older woman (which I am now anyway) with a wig & scarf, cane, wrinkled stockings, old eyeglasses & jewelry & my boyfriend (at that time) dressed as an older man/flasher. I can't believe how respectful people were at the bars & bowling alley! That was fun!

I think it would be funny to be Gatsby. Dress in dapper clothing and suspend a green Christmas light in front of you using a long object. Or maybe that's too depressing, especially these days? I also think it's quite funny that apparently the "S*xy Pilgrim/Hester Prynne" costume is a big hit--it's sold out on buycostumes [dot] com.

We're big Goodwill Halloween shoppers. One year, I managed to put together a great Annie costume for my red-headed daughter. The next year, she bought the tackiest purple 70's dress, a lavender wig, and a some matching sandals, did ghastly make-up and went as the Bridesmaid From Hell. My son went as a home-made robot one year (cardboard box, dryer vent hose, and old circuit boards), but his best costume was a bowl of clam chowder -- entirely his idea. We cut out the bottom of one of those big round catch-all tubs from Costco so he could 'wear' it, made a clam-shell hat from foam rubber, and fashioned a spoon out of cardboard and aluminum foil. A year later, my daughter used the same tub and added balloon 'bubbles' and went as a girl in a bubble bath. Cheap, fun, and non-commercial. Unfortunately, they're at that in-between age where they don't trick-or-treat and don't yet party, but I have high hopes for their futures as Halloweenies.

Oops, clicked that button before I intended to... Unfortunately, this year everyone of a certain age will turn up as a Twilight character (including my daughter and her friends, sadly). I like the idea of literary characters, but get sad when a certain popular book takes over and short-circuits imaginations. Yeah, I caved to Harry Potter when my son wanted to be him (he does, after all, wear glasses and have a scar on his forehead in the same spot) but I'd rather come up with something entirely unique. For me? I think I'll go as a cured ham (aka Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird)
