Terrier with a Bone
September 8, 2008

Understanding Quant FinanceThe Maven household includes two extremely ill-behaved miniature Schnauzers. They're rescue dogs, and a bit odd-looking -- one has freakishly large natural ears and a long tail, while the other has poorly cropped ears and  docked tail. A friend recently suggested that their names should be "Scratch" and "Dent."

We love them madly, of course.

One of the most entertaining aspects of owning (who am I kidding? They own us) terriers is watching them "play" with various toys (who are we kidding? They'd rather be shaking squirrels and rats). They're spirited, they want to share their "play" with us, and they're tenacious. They won't let go of anything if they don't have to.

Could there be a better dog for me? As my family and friends will tell you, I tend to be just a little bit stubborn (I am a Virgo, after all; my birthday was last Monday, which I mention because my friend R. says my chart indicates I'm more Virgo than any other Virgo).

That's a long lead-in to saying that over the weekend I pursued one of the fall books that I haven't received from its publisher. I have many -- keep them coming! -- but there was one book I've been hearing about and interested in and longing to read for several months. However, I forgot about it briefly while on vacation and never managed to email its publicist for a copy. Finally, on Saturday night while wandering a bookstore with the younger Mini Maven, I saw it right in front of me and had to buy it.

Here's the beauty part: I was not disappointed. Not even for one second. It was one of the finest and most consistent fiction reads I've had this year. Or any year, for that matter. Which book was it? Click here to find out and read my review.
