Sweetheart Deal
September 4, 2008

If your first book (which became a bestseller and put you seriously on the map, btw) was called Heartsick and your second one was called Sweetheart, what would you call your third, the one you're just finishing up now?  That was one of the more amusing topics of conversation at a lunch held at Michael's today for the Heartsick, Sweetheart, etc author Chelsea Cain.  Hosted by Cosmopolitan editor in chief Kate White, herself a bestselling thriller author, it was attended by various book review folk and Cain's editor and publisher at St Martin's Minotaur.   We were mostly kidding around when we came up with suggestions like "Heart of Darkness,"  (from John Searles, a Cosmo honcho and author in his own right), The Heart is A Lonely Hunter  (Ms. White) and Heartburn.  (moi)  Good Housekeeping's Laura Mathews opined that those choices said more about the choosers than about Ms. Cain's book -- but of course that's true, since none of us has read the work-in-progress and only some of us have read Sweetheart, which came out earlier this week.

I did read Heartsick, I want you to know -- and even though it's not my usual kind of book, I was riveted, and plan to take a look at Sweetheart pretty soon.

So, folks, what do you think?  Have you read Chelsea Cain?  If so, and even if not (why should you be any different from us lunchers?), post here with your votes on a  title for the third book.  Oh, and by the way, take a look at this creepy (and I mean that in a good way)video they've made for this book.

it thought Heartsick was awesome and recommended it to several people. She took what could have been a "been here read that" in a tired genre and made it riveting. and i bet she'll do it again with the next two.

Heart Broken. That's the only thing I can come up with. I loved Heartsick, btw, and agree that she had a really fresh spin and it was a great read. I've got Sweetheart on my bedside table waiting for me!

"Heartsick" was excellent; not my usual fare, but loved by everyone I've passed it along to. "Sweetheart" was disappointingly formulaic, but I'd be lying if I said I was bored reading it. And I can't wait for the third, which should be titled "Heartbreak" (realistically) and "I Heart Serial Murder" for t-shirt promos and giggles.

Heartfelt or Heartless I have read both books and have to add Sweet Heart is even better than Heartsick. Cain is a remarkable writer.

Why not chain the titles? that would mean something with Sweet at the end. Hmm, honeysweet or... sorry, I can't think of anything better. but then the next one would be ____honey and so forth. Shhesh, I have a hard enough trouble naming my own stories.

How about "Bleeding Hearts" (a little play on the viney fowers with the same name). I have thouroughly enjoyed Heartsick and just purchased Sweatheart and can not wait to finish up my Hoffman novel so I can get a start on it.

How about "Sickly Sweet". I am such a fan. . .I found these 2 books to be so griping that I read them both in 2 days. The whole world stopped around me as I totally immersed myself in the grips of Gretchen Lowell. I am dying for the next book. Keep 'em coming!

I'm think Heart Sweet - two common words, twisted in an unusual way. It makes me curious, and it follows the slant of the other titles. Haven't read either book yet, but after the comments I'm adding them to my reading list. - writeroffthelake

Heartache. I rarely get this excited over a series, after a disappointing "Dexter in the Dark" I was pleased to see that Cain has delivered again on all levels. Excellent ending in the book also, well done!

I read HeartSick in two days, unusual for me. I was riveted. My husband thought I had left him. Cant wait to get Sweet Heart. I was pleased to find out that I am not alone; someone else likes to watch televised surgery.

I have read both books and love them both! I thought about this for a few minutes and feel that the title Committed would fit perfectly. Grechen seems to be committed to Archie and Archie to Grechian and they both need to be committed.

I loved loved loved both books!!! I can hardly wait for the next one!! I thought the title Sweetheart was clever.. and used once in the book (which I took notice right away when I saw it and smiled)... I think whatever title you go with it will fit perfectly.. but if I had to come up with something, I might call it, Stolen Heart.. or Heart on the Rocks.... or..Vicodin Love.. lol

Chelsea you are awesome, your books are so captivating, literally. By the way you were torn between the 3 titles I think HeartBreaker also, but Heart Disease, Heart of Ice, Heavy Heart, HeartAche, but I am starting to lean toward Hypnotic Heart. I cannot wait until the 3rd book is released, please, please continue this series. I really like having a woman being a seriel killer.

I absolutely love this series and cannot wait for the third book - when is it coming out? I think that Ms. Cain has done an exceptional job engaging the reader and developing her characters (especially in her second book). I like Disheartened, HeartAttack, Heartbroken, Heartrending, Heavy-hearted, Heart-wrenching - anything with heart in the title! That way in the next book she could have him go into heart failure (secondary to liver failure) and need a heart transplant!
