Get Your Book On
August 28, 2008

Labor Day has been lassoed with many symbolic meanings: It's the end of summer, the start of school, the return of white pants to the closet. But for me, it's the beginning of fall's Book Festival season. USA Today takes note of it too and has this handy list of big ones for fall.

As a regular at the National Book Festival when I lived in the D.C. area, I loved moseying around the lawn next to the Capitol and seeing crowds gathered to hear Pat Conroy wax long (hasn't he done that in print already?), David Baldacci wax surprisingly eloquent about the love of reading and even Paige & Frank from TV's Trading Spaces wax cornball about fixer-uppers at a book show (naturally, they had one of the largest turnouts).

Sadly, I'm going to miss my first festival opportunity of the season in this zip code. Promising word about the Decatur Book Festival suggests it's a must for every word lover in the metro area.

It's the word lovers in fact that make these free-form events so anticipated. I finally identified the feeling at Book Expo one year, roaming around the convention center in Los Angeles. These are my kind, I thought, as I watched the hoards loaded down with bags of advance copies. I don't need to explain to them the excitement of an eagerly awaited title, the pleasure of a perfectly designed book or the mixed feelings of a favorite made into a mediocre movie. There is enormous relief in being among fellow believers.

Where's book-action near you? See Center for the Book's events calendar.

The always amazing Nikki Giovanni is headlining the Capitol Book Fest this year, so I'd definitely check that out!
