Thrillerfest: Mental Preparation and I Need Help
July 8, 2008

ThrillerFest
I'm trying to prepare mentally for ThrillerFest.  Laundry, packing, stopping mail is all pretty much rote by now, but I've got to admit that I'm kind of gaga about the list of authors awaiting me in New York.

From the ThrillerFest site:

ThrillerFest includes a multitude of author panels, signings, a complete bookstore on premises, and a reader’s reception. Meet attending thriller writers Bob Mayer, Steve Martini, Lee Child, Gayle Lynds, Tess Gerritsen, David Morrell, M. Diane Vogt, Joe Moore, M.J. Rose, Barry Eisler, Steve Berry, David Hewson, Jim Rollins, Christine Kling , D.P. Lyle, Shane Gericke, Kathleen Antrim, Christine Goff, Jon Land, Shirley Kennett, Heather Graham, R.L. Stine, and many more.

Smoke Screen by Sandra Brown
But then there are the "Special Guests."  Let's start with Sandra Brown.  I've been reading her forever.  Everyone I know is a fan and has read at least one of her fifty-five bestsellers.  To prepare I've been practicing in the mirror with my professional press look, but I know I'll quickly swoon into my reader/fan/stalker mode.  Must work harder on this.

7th Heaven by James Patterson
James Patterson.  Again, I've read all his books until he started "sharing" writer duties.  I'm dying to ask him if he will ever write a book by himself again, of course, why should he when his books automatically go to the bestseller list no matter who writes them.  I've heard lots of reader complaints, so we'll see if I can ask the tough questions while flashing my Flip video.

The Whole Truth by David Baldacci
David Baldacci.  I loved Absolute Power from the first page (the movie was kind of weak, so sad).  Probably no need to ask him anything, I just want a picture with him and naturally a Drive By Video™ a la Adrian Paul.

Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs

Kathy Reichs, author/forensic anthropologist/tv producer.  Ok, you know I'm going to have to ask her about David Boreanaz.  Like maybe, can she introduce me?

The Last Patriot by Brad ThorI've never read Brad Thor, but I plan to soon.  He has served as a member of the Department of Homeland Security's once top-secret Analytic Red Cell Program and is a New York Times bestselling author.  I'm sure he's had a lot of hard hitting political questions thrown at him, so I'm going to try and trip him up with my soft, romantic approach.  BTW, he has a really cool website and I noticed that he was here in Milwaukee last night and I missed him.  How could this happen?

Eric Van Lustbader has written bestsellers before taking over the The Bourne Sanction by Eric Van Lustbaderreins of the Robert Ludlum hero, Jason Bourne, by writing The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Betrayal.  Since I've always been a huge Ludlum fan, I want to ask him if he feels like a ghost writer by taking over another's popular character.  (I did just read on Brad's site that he is being called the Next Ludlum...will we have a clash of the would be Ludlum's in NY?)

There will be tons more authors there, so now I need your help.  What questions would you ask?  What's important for you to know as a reader?  As a fellow author?  As a fan?  Does it have to be about the book?  Who would you like to see Drive by Videos™ of?  Any other tips?

Bottom Line:  Even though I'm now an experienced NY traveler, I still plan to be on the look out for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.  True New York icons, so I'd better keep my Flip handy.

Barbara, you do such a great job with your drive-by videos. Better questions than I would think of. You just go out and do your stuff. :) And enjoy!

Yes, Barb, you make sure and meet Brad Thor. We were fortunate for him to stop at our store yesterday in Milwaukee. Very, very nice man, I'm glad I got to meet him. Have a great time!

Barbara, so happy you're going to ThrillerFest! Be sure to say "Hi!" while you're there--it's a very fun conference and an easy one to meet folks at, so don't be shy!

Barb I know you will have a great time and get to meet all the names there. All of the special guests Hubby and I read/listen to and love them all! Hubby really enjoyed Bard Thor so you have to read one of his books and meet him. ENJOY!!!!

Morning, Barbara I hope you have a lovely time in NYC and if you catch Jon or Stephen, please, please post a pic!!! I'm a huge fan of both! I'm a definitely member of the "Nation." *grin* Would love to know what type of pressure they experience, if any, with the release of each new book. How long does it take them to complete a project? What do they love most about writing? And has success changed them in any way?

Sad look. Shared writing? He doesn't write his own books? I honestly never knew that. I'm still a Fang and Max fan!

I met Sandra ThillerFest a couple of years ago. She is WONDERFUL. I had a horrible case of FanGirl and she was so gracious to me. I would love to meet her again and sit down and talk to her. I've never met the other authors you listed, but JA Konrath is a riot. You already met Barry Eisler at RT. Hope you have a GREAT Time!!!!

Barbara, the drive by vids are always fun, even when they're not about books specifically. Might be fun to do a set of drive-by "me-mes" where authors answer set questions about themselves and we can compare them.

I'm sure I wouldn't be able to form a cohesive sentence with that line up. Can't wait for your reports.

I'm off on the red-eye tonight to attend my third T-fest. It's a great time! Here's my most valuable piece of advice: Spend late nights in the bar. You'll be amazed by how approachable even the biggest names are, and you may make a few BFFs. Have fun!

Ms Susan Tunis, please come up and introduce yourself. I'll be waiting in the bar...for work purposes only.

Have fun...wish I could go! I'd like to know how long from concept to completion for one book for each author. Also, how did each get an agent (assuming they each have one!) Enjoy New York!

Wow Barbara! How exciting! Another New York trip! And the authors to be there! I can't begin to describe my envy! Have a great time! I don't know of any questions for the authors; just keep up the good work of interviewing, blogging & videotaping them!
