What are YOU reading?
June 23, 2008

I'm just back from a weekend trip to Austin, Texas, where I spoke at a writers' conference.  I particularly like to speak to this kind of group -- not that I have anything against trade groups/publishers, mind you -- because, while the participants want to learn about the business of publishing, what they really want to talk about is the books.  Their as-yet-unpublished books, maybe, but the one thing I've discovered about most would-be writers is that they're also gread readers.  So there were plenty of conversations that grew out of the simplest question:  what are you reading?  Click here to see where I started my answer. . .

I've never been able to stand "writer's conferences" and the like; the air of frustrated desperation tends to be a bit cloying-but the subject is aptly dealt with in the late Olivia Goldsmith's book Bestseller, if you want to comb the backlist for amusement...

The last comment talked about the "air of frustrated desperation," but as photographer for the Writers' League conference, I saw no such desperation anywhere. Everyone was upbeat and excited about their books and your keynote, Sara, was extremely well received. Thank you for coming.
