Urban Evolution: Fashion Show

Last night I was invited to Mount Mary College for the Urban Evolution Student Designer Fashion Show.  This was actually my first fashion show ever and the only other exposure I've had to this industry is the fabulously fierce TV show, Project Runway.  So, going with my own home ec experiences from high school, I was expecting aprons, wraparound skirts and tablecloths (hey, it took me 6 weeks to sew that tablecloth).  Well, I was in for a delightful treat.


The program started with a tribute to Sister Aloyse Hessburg who has taught at the school for 42 years.  A moving video chronicaled her time at Mt. Mary and I loved watching the hairdos and fashions changing through the decades (think Mr. Holland's Opus in a habit).  The best picture shown was of 4 nuns, in their full habits, sitting in the front row of a New York fashion show.  A sight that had to make more than one person do a double take.


Then the show began and the  fashions themselves definitely showcased the personalities of the young designers and ranged from comfy sweater dresses to swim wear to children's attire to men's wear to haute couture.  There were even shout outs to Woodstock, Jackie Kennedy and flappers.  To give the models an extra minute to change, two young men danced their way across the stage with moves that had the crowd whooping and hollering.  

The night ended with a wine reception and all the designers basking in the glory of their moment in the sun.  With friends and relatives there, it was love everlasting.
