SFU's Publishing Immersion Workshop Winner

Marisa Dobson of Minneapolis, Minnesota has won the first Simon Fraser University/Powell's Books all-expenses paid scholarship to SFU's Publishing Immersion Workshop.

Powell's and SFU announced the scholarship contest in March across North America asking applicants to submit an essay explaining why they would like to enter the publishing industry.

"Stories were my keys to other cultures, other eras, other mindsets. It is this translatability of the human experience that I believe gives literature its ultimate power. There is nothing that would make me more fulfilled than contributing to that collective experience, and that is why I want to serve as a conduit for unpublished authors," wrote Ms. Dobson in her successful essay.

This was the first partnership between SFU and Powell's Books and has created a unique bridge between publishers, readers and writers throughout North America. Global integration within the publishing industry has meant the publishing process is more and more often a cross-national experience.

Ms. Dobson will write about her experience at SFU Vancouver on Powells.com and www.sfu.ca/pubworks in late July.
