Editor, Entertainment Group
Chronicle Books has an exciting opportunity in its San Francisco office for a great pop culture editor who can work in our Entertainment group, acquiring and developing a vital, distinctive, and profitable list that speaks directly to its end consumer and enhances the reputation of the company as a whole.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Originate, acquire, and edit distinctive, profitable projects in key areas of the listnotably, but not limited to pop culture, media tie-ins, and humor. This job includes projects acquired by the editor and others in-house and includes such responsibilities as:
- Research trends in publishing and other relevant media including television, net, magazines, movies, newspapers, and affinity groups which could lead to timely, distinctive projects and opportunities
- Originate/acquire titles in book and non-book formats
- Originate custom publishing projects
- Actively pursue new partners and maintain relationships with existing partners with a view to originating new projects
- Actively seek ideas from within the Entertainment group as well across the company and beyond
- Evaluate and respond to submissions
- Negotiate deals with authors, agents, licensors, packagers, and overseas publishers, and maintain relationships with them and other publishing industry professionals
- Work with authors, artists, licensors, designers, overseas publishers, and packagers to develop the best possible titles
- Guide the title through the publishing process by working with design, production, and sales + marketing
- Serve as ongoing contact person between author and Chronicle Books
- Work alongside Entertainment group members to exceed goals for publishing that is not only profitable but also in the vanguard for the category
Periodic Job Responsibilities:
- Attend various meetings, such as weekly Entertainment group meeting, biweekly departmental meeting, launch, sales conference, transmittals, and other ad hoc meetings.
- Attend/work trade and consumer shows and outreach events such as Gift Show and BEA, as required.
Qualities and Qualifications:
We are seeking a candidate with at least 5-7 years of solid publishing experience who is self-directed and who is always seeking new ways to publish. The candidate should show a high level of commitment to the frank exchange of ideas and information with in-house team members and should nurture an atmosphere of mutual accountability and trust in the publishing group.
